Agriculture: Shrimp Farming in Mekong Delta Plagued by Unregistered Feed, Banned Drugs
SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Vietnam News Brief Service] July 21, 2017 The use of unregistered feed, banned drugs and substances for aquatic environmental treatments is rampant in shrimp farming the Mekong Delta, the biggest aquatic pond in Vietnam, the Nong Nghiep Viet Nam newspaper reported Thursday.
In Bac Lieu province, local authorities have detected 11 violations so far this year, mostly due to use of chemicals not allowed in shrimp farming. Last year, they found 11 local facilities selling substances of aquatic drugs and substances for aquatic environmental treatment not permitted by Vietnam’s authorities.
The use of banned chemicals and unregistered shrimp feed in Ca Mau, the biggest shrimp production area in the delta, is also rampant. Local authorities inspected 57 facilities selling materials for shrimp productions in the first half of this year and fond violations in 41 facilities. Last year, 83 facilities violated regulations, selling substances not permitted for shrimp breeding.
The sale of banned substances in shrimp farming is serious in Tra Vinh. In the first half, local authorities found 20 cases in which facilities sold unregistered shrimp feed and banned drugs. Last year, 45 local facilities committed acts.
Chau Cong Bang, deputy head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Ca Mau province, said there are numerous companies producing many substandard products for shrimp farming.
Shrimp farming is an important agricultural activity in the Mekong Delta and shrimp is among Vietnam’s export staples. The country targets to earn $3.4 billion from shrimp export this year and $10 billion by 2025.
Japan, the U.S., the EU and South Korea are the leading importers of Vietnamese shrimp.
